Dog DNA Health Screening Explained: Markers, Carriers, and the Vet Conversation
What dog DNA health screening actually checks. Breed-specific conditions, drug sensitivity, recessive vs dominant variants, and why a flagged result is not a diagnosis.
Dog DNA health screening reads specific positions in your dog’s genome and tells you whether your dog carries known disease-associated variants. It is useful context for vet conversations and breeder decisions. It is not a veterinary diagnosis, and it is not a comprehensive health screen. Reading the report well means understanding what the categories actually mean.
What the health panel covers
Embark Breed + Health screens 250+ inherited conditions. Wisdom Panel Premium screens 210+. Both panels cover the same broad categories, with slightly different specific variants:
- Breed-specific inherited conditions. MDR1 (multidrug resistance) is the best-known example, common in Collies, Australian Shepherds, and other herding breeds, and meaningful because dogs with the mutation can have severe reactions to common drugs like ivermectin. Other examples include collie eye anomaly, exercise-induced collapse in Labradors, and degenerative myelopathy in German Shepherds.
- Bleeding disorders. Von Willebrand disease (multiple types), hemophilia variants, and others.
- Eye conditions. Progressive retinal atrophy variants by breed.
- Drug sensitivity markers, beyond MDR1.
- Cardiac conditions. Specific cardiomyopathy variants known in certain breeds.
- Recessive conditions of broad relevance across many breeds.
The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) maintains the canonical list of canine genetic conditions with established DNA tests; both Embark and Wisdom Panel align their panels with this list where applicable.
Carrier vs at-risk: the inheritance pattern matters
The report categorizes each condition into three results:
- Clear. Your dog has zero copies of the variant.
- Carrier. Your dog has one copy of the variant. For recessive conditions, this means no expected symptoms but the variant can be passed to offspring.
- At-risk. Your dog has two copies of a recessive variant, or one copy of a dominant variant. The expected clinical significance depends on the condition.
This is where reading the report carefully matters. A “carrier” status for a recessive condition is a breeding consideration, not a clinical one. An “at-risk” status for a late-onset condition is a reason to be aware and to monitor, not a confirmation that the disease will develop. Penetrance is real: not every dog with a high-risk genotype develops the condition.

A flagged result is screening context, not a veterinary diagnosis.
Owners who treat a positive screening result as a confirmed disease spend money their vet did not need them to spend, run tests their dog did not need, and sometimes pursue treatment for a condition the dog will never develop. Owners who ignore a positive screening result miss a chance to monitor and prepare.
The correct response to a flagged result is to bring the report to your vet. For some conditions the vet will recommend confirmatory clinical testing. For others the vet will recommend ongoing monitoring. For some the vet will say the finding is informative but does not change clinical management.

What the panel does not cover
The health panel only screens for the specific variants it includes. Hundreds of recognized canine genetic conditions are not on any consumer panel, either because the underlying variant has not been definitively identified, because the condition has multiple genetic causes, or because the published evidence is not yet strong enough to include.
The panel also does not cover acquired disease, non-genetic conditions, or the many breed-typical risks that lack a clean single-marker test. “Negative” on the consumer panel does not mean “no genetic health risks.”
When to test
The most useful timing depends on the dog:
- Puppies. Useful for early identification of breed-specific risks worth monitoring across the dog’s life.
- Adult mixed-breed rescues. Useful for context on which breed-specific risks may apply.
- Senior dogs. Useful when a vet wants additional context for unexplained symptoms, although by this age many manifest conditions are diagnosed clinically.
- Breeding dogs. Specifically useful, and often what these panels were originally designed for. Knowing carrier status across both parents lets breeders avoid pairings that would produce affected offspring.
