MyHeritage and FamilyTreeDNA accept free uploads of raw data exported from AncestryDNA and 23andMe. That means a single $99 kit can yield matches in three databases at no extra cost, which changes the calculation for a budget-conscious buyer. Ancestry does not accept uploads.
23andMe is the only mainstream consumer test bundling FDA-authorized carrier and predisposition reports. The clinical scope of those reports is narrower than the marketing suggests, and the 2025 Chapter 11 filing has introduced real uncertainty about the company that holds the data. For region-specific buyers, Living DNA does a notably detailed British and Irish ancestry breakdown but has a small matching database. tellmeGen has strong European availability but a much smaller user base than the Big Three.
Whole-genome sequencing is now its own category. The consumer SNP tests above type about 700,000 positions in your genome; Sequencing.com, the active whole-genome service after Nebula Genomics shut down in February 2025, reads the entire genome. Worth knowing about, but rarely the right starting point for a first-time buyer.
