Two DNA tests can report the same matches and the same ethnicity, and still hand you completely different tool sets to work with. The tool layer is where the major brands have really differentiated. Here is what each one built, beyond the basic match list, as of early 2026.
AncestryDNA
AncestryDNA leans heavily on tree-based tooling and surfaces the largest match pool of any consumer test.
- ThruLines: connects DNA matches to specific ancestors in your tree, suggesting paths through common ancestors. Requires trees on both sides. The most powerful tree-DNA integration any brand offers.
- SideView: assigns ethnicity percentages to your maternal and paternal sides without needing a parent to test. Useful when parents are not available.
- Story Hints: pulls historical record snippets relevant to your matches, integrated with the broader Ancestry record corpus.

What AncestryDNA does not have: a chromosome browser or triangulation tools. This is the major gap.
23andMe
23andMe leans on chromosome-level visualization and trait reports. Apply our privacy caveats when evaluating it.
- Chromosome painting: shows which segments of each chromosome came from which ancestry group. The clearest visual representation of admixture available in consumer DNA.
- Traits and wellness reports: the largest catalog of trait reports in consumer DNA (eye color, hair texture, taste preferences, etc).
- Health predisposition and carrier status reports: 23andMe is the only mainstream consumer test with FDA-authorized reports. We do not interpret individual results.
- Haplogroup assignment for paternal (Y) and maternal (mt) lines.
MyHeritage
MyHeritage DNA leans on smart-matching automation across DNA and records.
- AutoClusters: groups your matches into colored clusters that likely share a common ancestor. One of the most efficient ways to break a brick wall.
- Theory of Family Relativity: proposes specific common ancestors for matches, pulling from records and other users’ trees.
- Chromosome browser with segment-level detail.

FamilyTreeDNA
FamilyTreeDNA is the only mainstream brand with deep Y and mt tooling.

How to pick by tooling
If your project is tree-driven genealogy, AncestryDNA’s ThruLines plus MyHeritage’s Theory of Family Relativity is the strongest pairing. If your project is surname-line research, FamilyTreeDNA’s Y-DNA tools are non-negotiable. If your project is ethnicity visualization, 23andMe’s chromosome painting is unmatched.
