Consumer Microbiome Testing Review: What You Get for the Money

A balanced look at Viome, ZOE, Thryve, BIOHM, and atlasbiomed. We cover what each test measures, what the science supports, and where the marketing runs ahead.

Consumer microbiome testing sits in a different category from the novelty DNA tests we cover elsewhere in this cluster. The underlying science is real, the research base is growing fast, and the credentialed researchers behind some of these companies are not embarrassed to be associated with the products. The honest question is not “is this a scam,” because the testing itself is a real biological measurement. The question is whether the personalized recommendations that come back from a single time-point sample tell a healthy individual anything actionable they did not already know.

We have spent enough time with the major consumer microbiome products to have a balanced view. This review is the version we send to readers asking whether to spend $250 to $400 on one of these kits.

A note on scope. Microbiome testing is not technically a human DNA test; it sequences the genetic material of the microbes living in your gut. We cover it once, here, because it shares shelf space with the consumer DNA category and because the same buyer asking about a DNA diet kit is usually also asking about ZOE or Viome.

A second note on monetization. As of early 2026 we have not signed up to any affiliate program for the products in this review, and the merchant mentions below are plain text rather than tracked affiliate links. If that changes we will say so explicitly and update the article.

What these tests actually measure

The consumer microbiome category splits roughly into two technical approaches.

The first is 16S rRNA sequencing. This reads a specific bacterial gene across all the microbes in a sample, identifies which bacterial families and genera are present, and gives a relative-abundance profile. Most of the lower-cost consumer kits use this approach. Thryve (now sold as Ombre), BIOHM, and atlasbiomed work at this level. The output is a community profile and a set of recommendations derived from that profile.

The second is shotgun metagenomics, sometimes paired with metatranscriptomics. This reads the full genetic content of the sample (metagenomics) or the actively expressed RNA (metatranscriptomics). It gives a more detailed picture, including strain-level resolution and functional gene content. Viome markets a metatranscriptomic test that claims to measure not just which microbes are present but which are metabolically active. ZOE combines microbiome sequencing with continuous glucose monitoring and a blood-fat response test to produce its personalized nutrition score.

The technologies are real. The price reflects the technology, roughly. A 16S kit usually runs $99 to $200. A Viome plan starts around $299 and runs higher with subscriptions. ZOE is sold as a membership program with upfront testing fees and a monthly subscription that, over a year, runs into four figures.

The research base, honestly

The strongest published work in the consumer microbiome space is the PREDICT program, run by researchers affiliated with King’s College London, Massachusetts General Hospital, and several other institutions, with involvement from ZOE. PREDICT 1, published in Nature Medicine in 2020, showed that postprandial responses (blood glucose, blood lipids) to the same standardized meals vary substantially between individuals, and that the variation is only partly explained by macronutrient content. A 2021 companion paper in the same journal, Asnicar et al., tied elements of the microbiome to those responses across more than 1,000 individuals.

This is real work, published in a high-impact venue, with reasonable sample sizes. It supports the broad claim that diet response is individualized and that the microbiome is part of the picture. It does not yet prove that following a personalized microbiome-derived nutrition plan improves long-term health outcomes more than standard dietary advice in healthy individuals.

The American Gastroenterological Association’s published clinical practice updates on the role of the intestinal microbiota in gastrointestinal disease take a careful tone. The microbiome matters in specific clinical contexts (C. difficile infection, inflammatory bowel disease, recurrent gastrointestinal disease), often under clinical oversight. For routine “personalized nutrition” in healthy adults, the AGA’s position is that clinical evidence does not yet support routine direct-to-consumer microbiome testing for diet guidance.

The FDA’s stance on direct-to-consumer tests also matters here. The FDA has not authorized consumer microbiome tests as diagnostic devices. The products are sold as wellness, not clinical diagnostics.

How the major products compare

Viome (US-based, well-funded, $299 and up). The pitch is metatranscriptomic testing of stool that captures microbial activity, not just composition. The recommendations come back as a long list of foods to enjoy, minimize, and avoid. The technology is genuinely more detailed than 16S. Whether the resulting food list improves outcomes for a healthy person versus generic Mediterranean-pattern eating is, as of early 2026, not demonstrated in published trials at the level we would call conclusive. ZOE (UK-rooted, subscription model). ZOE’s strength is the research base. PREDICT 1 and PREDICT 2 are real, peer-reviewed, sizable studies. ZOE’s program combines a microbiome test, a blood lipid response test, a continuous glucose monitor period, and an app that scores foods for the user. It is the most expensive product in the category and the most research-anchored. We think it is the most credible commercial option for a buyer who is committed to actually changing their diet and is willing to engage with the app long-term. Available at joinzoe.com.

Thryve / Ombre (US, lower-cost 16S testing). The product is community profiling at the genus level with probiotic recommendations. Useful as curiosity. Less compelling as a personalized nutrition tool. The science behind matching a probiotic supplement to a 16S profile is thin. Sold at ombrelab.com.

BIOHM (US, 16S with a fungal panel). The differentiator is that the test profiles both bacteria and fungi. Same overall caveats as Thryve apply. The product line includes probiotic supplements, which is a financial conflict to be aware of when reading the recommendations. Sold at biohmhealth.com.

atlasbiomed (UK-based, 16S). A consumer-friendly product with diet and gut-health reports. Same category caveat. Sold at atlasbiomed.com.

Our honest verdict

The microbiome is real biology and matters for human health. Consumer microbiome tests measure it accurately at the resolution they claim. The gap between the measurement and an actionable recommendation for a healthy individual is where the marketing currently runs ahead of the evidence.

Where we think these tests have value. People with a real interest in their own biology who treat the result as a starting point rather than a prescription. People working with a clinician who can interpret the profile in context. People who would commit to a structured program like ZOE’s and would not commit to anything cheaper.

Where we are skeptical. The promise that a single stool sample yields a personalized nutrition plan that will outperform standard healthy-eating advice for a healthy adult, in measurable long-term outcomes, is not yet supported by trials of the size and rigor we would want.

For specific clinical questions (IBD, IBS, recurrent C. difficile, suspected small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), a gastroenterologist orders the right testing through clinical labs. A direct-to-consumer kit is not the right tool.
