A DNA test rarely costs what the sticker says. Sale prices are constant, shipping is a real line item, and the optional subscription on some platforms can dwarf the kit price within a year. Here is what you actually pay, with current numbers from each merchant as of early 2026.

Sale cadence: do not pay MSRP
The big four consumer tests run major sales on a predictable cadence. DNA Day in late April, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Prime Day in mid-summer, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and holiday/New Year promotions. Sale prices typically take AncestryDNA and MyHeritage to $39, FamilyTreeDNA’s Family Finder to $59, and Living DNA’s ancestry kit to around $79. If you can wait six to eight weeks for the next sale, you will almost always save $30 to $60.
The shipping line you forgot about
Most kits charge shipping separately. AncestryDNA’s published shipping is roughly $9.95 for the first kit and $4.95 for each additional kit shipped to the same address as of early 2026. Other companies charge similarly. For a $39 sale kit, $10 of shipping is a real fraction of the total.
Family deals usually mean shipping multiple kits to one address, which is where the per-additional-kit shipping discount adds up. If you are buying for several relatives, ship to one address and redistribute, rather than shipping each kit separately.
Subscriptions: the real long-term cost on some platforms
Ancestry offers DNA results without any subscription. You see your matches, your ethnicity estimate, and the basic tools at no recurring cost. The subscriptions sell access to the genealogical records (census, immigration, historical documents) that turn matches into traceable family trees.
As of early 2026, Ancestry’s records subscriptions run roughly:
- US Discovery, about $24.99 per month
- World Explorer, about $39.99 per month
- All Access, about $49.99 per month
For a serious genealogy project, one of these is the single biggest cost you will incur, and it can dwarf the kit price within a few months. The subscription is not required to use your DNA results. It is required to research the family tree those results imply. Annual prepay options typically discount the monthly rate; promotional first-month deals are common.
MyHeritage and FamilyTreeDNA also sell records or feature subscriptions separately from DNA. None of them are required to view your DNA matches.
Add-ons and tiers
A few common upsells:
- AncestryDNA Traits bundle adds personality and physical-trait reports for around $20 over the base kit, taking the total to about $119.
- 23andMe historically priced its Health+Ancestry product at $199 or more, versus $99 for ancestry only. Verify current tiers given the post-bankruptcy changes.
- Living DNA’s wellness/ancestry bundle has been sold around $169 versus $99 for the ancestry-only kit.

Buying two or more kits at once usually unlocks a per-kit discount on AncestryDNA, MyHeritage, and FamilyTreeDNA, plus the reduced per-additional-kit shipping mentioned above. For couples and family-tree projects, the two-kit price is often the most useful number to compare.
The total to budget
For one person, one test, on sale, with shipping, you should budget roughly $50 to $70 today. For a couple buying two kits at the same time, roughly $100 to $130. Add subscription costs on top if you plan to use the records side of Ancestry or MyHeritage. Add health-tier upgrades if you want them. And add whole-genome sequencing as a separate decision in a higher bracket.
