Finding Unknown Relatives With DNA: A Practical Strategy

How to use DNA testing to find unknown biological relatives: which databases to test in, how to upload raw data, and where to turn for support.

People search for unknown relatives for many reasons. Adoptees looking for biological family. Donor-conceived adults piecing together donor siblings. Anyone whose tree has a gap where a grandparent or great-grandparent should be. The strategy below is the one experienced search angels use, and it works whether you are looking for a parent, a half-sibling, or a more distant cousin who can help fill in a branch.

Start with the largest databases first

The single most useful action is to test at AncestryDNA, which sits around 25 to 30 million profiles as of early 2026. More profiles means more potential matches and a better chance that the relative you are looking for, or one of their close cousins, is already in the system. Consider 23andMe carefully

23andMe has about 14 million profiles as of early 2026, and a different user base than Ancestry. It can surface relatives the other companies miss. Work the closest matches first

A match sharing 1,500 centimorgans or more is a close cousin or closer. Those are the matches worth contacting first because their family trees, even sparse ones, narrow the search dramatically. Our shared DNA chart shows which relationships fall into which ranges.

When a match has no tree, you can often work out who they are from their profile name, location, and the trees of their own matches. This is the craft of genetic genealogy, and it takes patience.

Tools that experienced searchers use

DNA Painter lets you map shared segments to known ancestors and quickly tell whether a new match descends from a maternal or paternal line. Triangulation confirms that three or more people share the same segment from the same ancestor, which is how brick walls actually fall.

Support communities

Search Angels are volunteers who help people work through DNA matches toward an unknown relative. DNA Detectives runs a large private Facebook group with vetted search angels. Search Squad does the same. These groups are free, experienced, and discreet. They are also a better first stop than asking a professional researcher, because the volunteer network is where most of this expertise lives.
